week 6_presentation

It is always interesting walking around looking at other peoples presentations and how they interpreted the brief for a piece of assessment. It was good feedback from the tutors during our feedback and even stirred a debate with Davor about the ethical issues with creating a future where the city is 'sponsored' by big corporations. This played into the issue of the big corporations pigeon holing their giving market and not letting other competitors in the market. This is something that can be developed further into the next project.

week 6_ photoshop montage

This montage was done for the architectural outcomes, to show what our possible future would be. In conjunction with photoshop I used a picture I took of the site at the top of Queens St laying other images from Piccadilly Circus, London to the left and Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo along with all of the corporation logo's of the company's that where chosen prior.

week 5_tutorial

This tutorial was used to really start making the hard decisions for the aspects of the project. Outlining our characters - name, sex, daily life movements and how our scenario could be explained through the eyes of these four characters.

It was decided that each group member would formulate a character each, which in turn would lead to their given architectural outcome. We decided on basic criteria for each character; Georgia's character would be a corporate CEO, Isabel's character would be an older person that has lived in city for an extended period of time, Sarah's character would be the protestor would be against all the changes that was happening in Brisbane, and my character was the young person who would be content with the changes to Brisbane because they would have none nothing else than the life that was providing to them by the corporations.

week 5_lecture

I always enjoy Phil's lectures and he didn't disappoint, talking about two very interesting projects - Highline, New York and a proposed project Lowline, New York. I have seen the Highline project before and have always found it a fascinating project. Before this though Phil discussed an understanding of the future city - this was broken up into five categories of understanding; Breathing, Eating, Making, Moving and Dwelling.

week 3_tutorial

From the previous week's tutorial our group put Urban as our first preference and Suburban as our second preference. Luckily we got our first preference of Urban as we liked the idea of exploring a future Brisbane with a congestion charge and other possible influences.

As this was our last semester of design before master (where design would have to be more real world), we decided to brainstorm what would be considered out there ideas. A few of these included:

Zombie Apocalypse
Government control via drug addiction

These options where initially discussed and a post reasoning approach was taken. After a discussion between each other and with Yasu and Davour it was decided that while these ideas where interesting and could possibly be justified that they where to 'out there.'

So using these ideas as a premise a new idea was formulated where big corporations would essentially buy parts of Brisbane. This was backed up by leading information on the decided time period which was 2012(now) - 2042. Some of those components are: mining boom goes bust, cost of living goes up, unemployment rate rises, with the introduction of the congestion charge. Also previous basis that the Queensland Government has previously sold state assets.

week 3_reading

Brand, S., 1997. Shearing Layers, in How buildings learn : what happens after they’re built, London: Phoenix Illustrated. pp12-23

This articles looks at the juxtaposition of ever changing architecture as buildings can have a long history and nothing is what it seems to truly be. It delves into the different facets of evolving architecture and highlights several examples of how easily a building can change and adapt every so often. That growth and change are inevitable and that it is possible for architecture to follow suit.

Zelfde, J. V., 2012. "The aspatial city." The continuous partial everywhere

This article goes through a few ideas of the future city seen through the aspects of today's social media tools and other at your fingertip applications. Zelfde discusses the benefits of all these applications and that fact you can not seen someone for years and still feel like you saw them yesterday through the use of these media tools. He also highlights the detriment this can cause as we are 'to connected.'

week 2_tutorial

These images are an analysis of all four topic areas: Urban, Suburban, Regional and Virtual. Through this analysis I formed an understanding of each topic area as to aid me in decided what area I wanted to delve in further.

week 2_reading

Barton, H., 2000. Urban form and locality. In H. Barton, ed. Sustainable communities: the potential for eco-neighbourhoods. London: Earthscan, pp. 105-122.

This publication delves into the argument in creating micro cities rather than macro cities that have been the norm in the past. Macro cities were a good idea in the past where resources were readily available and easily expendable. But as sustainability is at the forefront in today's world the idea of micro cities is becoming popular. To adapt existing macro cities you would create micro cities within it, where everything that is required would be found within it. This in turn would allow a network within that macro city possibly creating a better functioning city. I like this idea of creating the micro within the macro as it can decentralise a city in creating smaller satellite cities essentially.

Fackler, M., 2011. Tsunami Warnings, Written in Stone. Accessed 20 July 2012.

This article looks at the importance of looking to the past and to have a respect for it. Much can be learnt from the past as it almost certainly informs our present and future. This needs to taken into account to formulate our future and in this project.

Motavalli, J., 2011. A History of Greenwashing: How Dirty Towels Impacted the Green Movement. Accessed 28 July 2012.

What started out as an inspiration from a hotel towel sign, formed a basis in how the word 'green' is looked upon. How many companies manipulate this word to perceived as 'green' with little basis or actual 'green' initiatives in place and merely used to save them money or an act to save face.
